SEO is now social: optimizing to be found within platforms

The discipline of showing up in search has not died; it switched platforms, and almost nothing you know about Google applies in the same way.

When I tell a marketing team that "SEO is now social", the typical reaction is misplaced relief: "great, then just post more." It is not. The phrase does not dispense with SEO discipline, it requires the same discipline applied to a different terrain, with its own rules.

Optimizing for search within TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest is as methodical as optimizing for Google. What changes is almost everything in the how. And those who treat networks like bulletin boards, with no intention of searching behind each piece, waste the most durable asset that exists on these platforms.

This text is about the new craft. It's not a trend theory, it's what changes in the content operation.

The turn: from keyword to spoken question

Traditional SEO was born from the often truncated typed keyword: "men's cheap running shoes." The social search is spoken, conversational, complete: "which running shoes that don't hurt your feet for those who are just starting out."

This difference is the heart of the strategy. Within networks, the algorithm learns about your content from what you say out loud, what you write in the caption, the text on the screen and the transcribed audio. There is no longer a single keyword field; there is a set of signals, and the winner is whoever feeds them all coherently.

This means ditching the jargon and adopting the customer’s language. If people say "cell phone that doesn't heat up", that's what needs to be said in the video, not "smartphone with optimized thermal management". Social SEO rewards those who speak like the public asks.

The new ranking signals

Each platform considers its own factors, but there is a common core that every content leader should know.

Spoken audio counts. Both TikTok and YouTube transcribe what is said and use this to understand the topic. Saying the keyword out loud, in the first few seconds, is not a detail, it is a sign of relevance.

The text on the screen counts. Embedded subtitles, titles about the video, descriptions. It is machine-readable and human-readable text at the same time, and it also solves the problem of those watching without sound.

The caption and the first characters count a lot. This is where the main keyword lives, the question that the content answers. Generic caption is a wasted search opportunity.

And the most underrated sign: retention and completion. The platforms measure whether people watched until the end and whether the response was satisfactory. Content that delivers what it promised in the title rises in the search; one who stalls to inflate screen time is punished by abandonment. The logic is similar to that of Google penalizing those who do not respond to the intention, only measured in seconds of real attention.

Evergreen content vs. feed content

Here is the most profitable strategic change that almost no one makes.

Most brands produce for the feed: content that lives on the day of publication, catches the peak of reach and dies. It's legitimate, but it's work that starts from scratch every week.

Search-optimized content is another animal. It answers a stable question, the kind that people type every month, and continues to be found long after publication. A "how to clean white sneakers" video can bring in search engines for years. It is the asset that compounds, instead of evaporating.

The portfolio decision is deliberate: part of the production chases the feed peak, part builds the searchable library. Those who only feed are always chasing lost reach. Those who balance build a collection that works alone, just like a good blog article did in the golden age of traditional SEO.

The content strategy this requires

Optimizing for social search reorganizes the content process from top to bottom.

Start by searching for terms within each platform. The search bar itself suggests what people type; autocomplete is your free keyword research. Write down the variations, questions, and recurring doubts in your category. That's the brief.

Structure each piece as an answer to a single, clear question. One video, one question resolved. Trying to answer five things at once confuses the algorithm and the viewer. Focus is ranking.

Repeat the audience's vocabulary in three layers: in the spoken audio, in the on-screen text, and in the caption. Coherence between the three signals is what makes the platform certain of the theme.

And build around themes, not loose pieces. Several videos answering neighboring questions from the same category create thematic authority, and the platform starts to provide you as a reference on that subject. It is the social equivalent of the content cluster concept. For the specific terrain of the video, I detailed the mechanics in how to appear in TikTok search.

What changes for those who measure results

The last change is metric, and this is where most people make mistakes.

In traditional SEO, the star is the SERP position and the click to the website. In social SEO, much of the value remains within the platform: the person found, watched, followed, saved, decided, and perhaps only then went to your website via direct search. Measuring referral traffic alone grossly underestimates the effect.

It's worth monitoring how much of your reach comes from the search tab and searched terms, and not just from the feed. Professional platforms expose this. This number tells you how much of your audience arrives with declared intention, which is the most valuable audience there is.

The honest closing: SEO didn’t become irrelevant, it became multiplatform. The brand that ranks on Google and is found within the networks occupies the entire journey. The one that only does one of the two appears half done.

Choose a platform where your audience searches and build, this quarter, a library of ten pieces that answer the ten most typed questions in your category. It’s the best-returning social SEO investment I know.
