Few questions about technology generate as much anxiety as this one: Will AI kill web development? It appears in the mouths of those who are starting to study, those who already work in the area and those who decide whether it is worth putting together a team. The short answer is no. The honest answer is more interesting, and more useful for those who need to make decisions.
AI is not eliminating web development. It's redistributing where the value is. Those who understand this difference make better decisions about careers, hiring and how to use technology without deluding themselves or paralyzing themselves.
What the data really shows
It’s worth separating fear from evidence. Most developers already use AI to generate some of their code, and the vast majority report productivity gains. This is real change, not hype. At the same time, no serious research predicts large-scale replacement of web developers in the coming years. On the contrary: most companies plan to grow their technology teams, and the projection of vacancies in the area remains well above average.
In other words: AI has drastically changed how work is done, without reducing the demand for those who do it. The two things coexist because software work was never just about typing code. Typing has become cheap; the rest, no.
What AI does well, and why it’s not enough
It's honest to recognize what AI does well, because denying it only gets in the way. It generates code from a description, completes repetitive sections, explains other people's code, suggests corrections and speeds up tedious work. For well-defined and mechanical tasks, it is fast and getting better.
The problem is that real software is rarely a well-defined, isolated task. It is a living system, full of interdependent decisions, business restrictions, security, context that is not written anywhere. AI confidently generates a plausible solution, and plausible is not the same as correct. Those who don't know how to evaluate the difference accept the subtle error and pay later.
AI is excellent at producing answers. She's terrible at knowing if the question was right. And a lot of the development work is figuring out what the right question is.
Value migrated, did not evaporate
The useful image is not that of the developer being replaced. It's the developer changing roles: from author of each line to reviewer, advisor and responsible. An experienced professional with good AI tools today produces what previously required a small team. This did not eliminate the professional, it made each one more leveraged.
What increases in value in this scenario is exactly what AI doesn't have: understanding the business problem, deciding architecture, critically reviewing, ensuring security and keeping the system sustainable after the AI finishes the work. What drops in value is what was mechanical: remembering syntax, writing boilerplate, repeating patterns. Those who have built their careers solely on the mechanical side need to worry, not about AI, but about having stopped growing.
The trap of both extremes
There are two opposing mistakes that are costly. The first is panic: concluding that it is no longer worth learning or hiring development because “AI will do it”. Anyone who thinks like this misses the window to become the professional who guides AI, precisely what is on the rise. The second is denial: treating AI as a passing toy and continuing as if nothing had changed. Those who do this fall behind those who already produce more with the same people.
The mature stance is in the middle: using AI seriously, understanding its limits and investing in what it doesn't do. For a leader, this means not cutting the team thinking that AI solves it, nor ignoring the tool thinking it's fashionable. It means redesigning work so that people do what matters and AI does what is repetitive.
What does this mean for those who decide
If you lead technology or hire development, the practical conclusion is straightforward. You can't evaluate a team based on typing speed, because that has become a commodity. Evaluate by judgment: do you understand the problem? review what the AI produces? keep what they build? These questions separate those who use AI to get further from those who use AI to accumulate debt faster.
And if you are the professional concerned about the question in the title, the best answer is to change the game. AI will not replace you; replaces the most boring part of your job. What it can't do, think about the right problem, decide responsibly, take care of the whole, is exactly where it's worth investing. web development is not ending. It is no longer rewarding those who only type, but rather those who think.
